Senior Accountant/Controller


Reports to Senior Management
Location Ottawa office
Salary Range $70,000 to $90,000

SGL is hiring a Senior Accountant/Controller who will use their strong knowledge of accounting practices to support SGL’s financial operations and strategy. The financial controller will ensure financial processes and reporting are conducted in accordance with company policies and generally accepted accounting principles. This is a permanent, full-time position.

Responsibilities

  • Lead timely month-end and year-end closing processes in accordance with established reporting timelines;
  • Record and review complex accounting transactions to ensure accuracy and completeness;
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve accounting discrepancies in a timely manner;
  • Prepare or coordinate the preparation of financial statements, management reports, summaries, and other cost-benefit analyses;
  • Ensure compliance of the company’s financial statements with applicable accounting standards and regulations;
  • Support internal and external audits, including identifying and monitoring corrective actions;
  • Coordinate periodic forecasting activities, analyzing variances and making recommendations as required;
  • Provide financial analysis and strategic insight to senior management to support decision-making;
  • Evaluate financial reporting systems and accounting procedures, recommending enhancements to improve efficiency, accuracy, and financial controls;
  • Evaluate and execute accounting and internal control systems, ensuring internal approval procedures are followed;
  • Monitor and safeguard company assets;
  • Perform other accounting and administrative tasks as required; and
  • Understand, comply and promote all company policies and procedures including reporting of hazards and incidents encountered in daily operations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Postsecondary education in accounting, commerce, or related discipline and/or relevant work experience which demonstrates ability to complete responsibilities;
  • A minimum of five years of progressive experience in accounting, auditing, financial planning and analysis, preferably in the private sector;
  • Knowledge of accounting software (Sage), purchase order databases and spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice);
  • Close attention to detail to ensure accuracy;
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities, ensuring timely and accurate reporting;
  • Analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to translate financial data into strategies and action;
  • Works well in a team environment, as well as independently;
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal skills, and written and oral communication; and
  • High level of professionalism and discretion in handling confidential information.
