HSE/International Risk Analyst


Job Location: Ottawa, Ontario

The SGL HSE/International Risk Analyst will be responsible for managing the company’s overseas and Canadian safety, security, and environmental risk. The successful candidate will report directly to the company co-presidents, and administer all aspects of the company’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies and procedures.

Geopolitical Analysis Responsibilities

  • Carry out project security reviews to report on potential security issues for possible survey locations;
  • Research geopolitical trends and issues, collect data from various international sources and prepare unbiased reports;
  • Stay up-to-date with international news and developments;
  • Administer HSE related policies and procedures for employee deployments: risk assessments, audits, personnel briefings, and ongoing HSE reviews;
  • Responsible for overseeing field and office emergency response planning; and
  • Maintain company HSE inventories (PPE, first aid kits, etc.) for overseas deployments.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Responsibilities

  • Responsible for implementing the company's compliance with Canada Labour Code, Part II.
  • Co-chair the company HSE committee meetings, draft the minutes of all HSE committee meetings and confirm that follow-up occurs on all action items.
  • Lead investigator for company incidents and hazards. Responsible for ensuring that findings and documentation are completed and closed in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain HSE documentation and statistics in a form suitable for proposals and audits.
  • Conduct health and safety briefings for new employees.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science, International Relations, International Development or a related field;
  • Occupational Health and Safety Diploma or certification a definite asset;
  • Proven research and report writing skills, with experience carrying out country specific security assessment and reviews;
  • Experience participating in projects in the developing world;
  • Passion for following geopolitical developments and ability to analyze potential security threats and trends;
  • Experience in the NGO sector, aviation, or oil and gas exploration.
