AEM Electrical Design Engineer


Job Location: Ottawa, Ontario

This position reports to the Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities of the Position

  • Develop new airborne electromagnetic geophysical survey systems;
  • Supervise engineering teams;
  • Research and develop new systems from start to finish:
    • Conceptual design and verification of electrical systems
    • Documentation for manufacturing and operations
    • Field support for AEM systems
  • Read and create avionics wiring diagrams, electrical schematics and interface control documents using CAD based software;
  • Ensure conformance with generally accepted aircraft wiring and installation practices and aircraft specific wiring manuals;
  • Commission of electrical equipment with high/medium and low voltage;
  • Instrumentation design and development of geophysical equipment;
  • Troubleshooting/resolution of existing electrical components and systems;
  • Undertake QA/QC of engineering products and design packages for quality and compliance with applicable codes;
  • Electrical safety code interpretation;
  • Prepare cost estimates for design work;
  • Provide status reports on projects to the Engineering Manager, as required;
  • Participate in performance appraisals of direct reports;
  • Provide timely technical support to field crews, as required by phone or email;
  • Understand, comply with, and promote all company safety precautions and policies, including reporting hazards and incidents encountered during daily operations;
  • Attend and complete training courses and/or company examinations, as required;
  • Maintain a high level of technical and operational knowledge through direct engagement with colleagues, supervisors, and personal development;
  • Maintain good records and documentation of all designs, reports, and testing as well as, resulting verification data;
  • Maintain project schedules and design goals; and
  • Perform and complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in relevant engineering discipline;
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience;
  • Experience with electromagnetic instrumentation design and fabrication;
  • Experience in the design and demonstrated understanding of airborne geophysical hardware and digital signal processing;
  • Experience and knowledge of VHDL, FPGA programming, and PCB layout;
  • Experience and knowledge of embedded Linux development such as Yocto Linux;
  • Familiarity with time and frequency domain electromagnetic systems;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
  • Ability to communicate in multiple languages an asset;
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with various stakeholders, such as suppliers, vendors, aircraft certification authorities, and other employees;
  • Excellent report writing skills; and
  • Ability to establish priorities, direct the work of others, and multitask in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to liaise with various stakeholders, such as suppliers, vendors, aircraft certification authorities, and other employees;
